Iphone 13 not shutting off when overheated

Woke up this morning at almost 5am due to the smell of smoke. Turns out nothing was smoking, but my iPhone 13 (that was plugged in roughly only 4 hours before) was overheating on the bed & burning my sheets. The phone never turned off, the heat was so bad there was a temporary charge hold (when plugged in it had 20%, when I woke up only 61%. I managed to turn it off with minor burns to my hands. Is this normal? I've had this phone since its release and its NEVER done this, unlike a lot of similar stories my phone DID turn back on but it heats up again once on. I don't know what to do I'm just a broke college student ):
