My subscription to Microsoft Office Home and Business 2019 expired but still functions. Has anyone purchased and installed the relatively new Microsoft Office 2024 for PC/Mac and how is that working for you? My iMac system is fully updated. Thanks for your help.

Microsoft Office 2024 for PC/Mac isn't out yet.
If you look on Microsoft's site, under plans for home users, they only mention Microsoft 365 Family, Microsoft 365 Personal, and Office Home & Student 2021.
There is a commercial preview of Microsoft Office LTSC 2024. This is a "long-term servicing channel" version, for specialized uses "such as regulated devices that cannot accept feature updates for years at a time."
The preview program is intended only for organizational users, not for home users of Office.

So you might need to wait until the home version comes out before anyone will have much experience with it.

I suspect the OP is thinking of changing from a subscription to a one-time purchase.
However, I believe Microsoft has arranged things so you don't get as much with the one-time purchase product as with the subscription one. Their little way of "nudging" you onto the subscription.
Microsoft Office Home and Business is not a subscription product.
Microsoft 365 is a subscription product.
I did so. Microsoft has now offered the new Office for an increased cost but it works well. And they will keep it updated for you.
