jpg photos recognized on one Mac but not another

I have a bunch of older jpg photos in the Photos app that I am trying to transfer (via usb thumb drive) to my wife's Mac. I'm on the latest MacMini, she's on the latest MacBook Air, both running Sonoma 14.5.

We've hit a batch from 2012 that I can view on my Mac' Photo app and iPhone without issue, but when we try to import them to her MacBook we get the "Cannot Import" message box in Photos with an "unknown error" due to either an unrecognized file format or the file may not contain valid data.

How can this be if they are viewable on my Mac and iPhone? Have searched for an answer online but not found any clues.

Thanks

Mac mini, macOS 14.5

How are you transferring them out of Photos? The best way would be to use "File>Export>Export Unmodified Originals," or to use "File>Export>Export nn Photos" for edited pictures. "Export" should produce compatible files, though other methods may not.

If they don't work after you have used the Export process, then Yer_Man's suggestion may fix it. If that doesn't work, try using Export from Preview.

Have the problematic JPEGs edited with an external editor?

Sometimes external editors are saving the edited versions backt to Photos with the filename extension "JPG", but they are not JPEGs at all, but camouflaged TIFFs and Photos will refuse to import them.

Have you checked the Info for the problematic files in Preview, when you viewed it in Preview? Just open the Info in Preview with ⌘I and look at the "Kind". Does it show JPEG or something else?

For example, this TIFF has been saved back to Photos by Luminar, with the filename extension JPG, but it is a TIFF file, as shown in Preview.

As a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Try to import some of the problem photos to see if the same problem persists. Does it? This tells us if the problem is limited to your current library or is more wide spread.

It they import successfully close the test library, open your original library and try importing again.

Thanks to both Richard and Yer_Man for the suggestions, but sadly none of them worked.

We can view the troublesome jpgs when opened in Preview on my wife's Mac. But they throw the "unrecognized format/unknown error" when trying to import them into the Photos app. This happens in all cases:

  1. after re-exporting them from my Mac as unmodified originals
  2. after saving them in Preview then exporting them from Preview
  3. importing them from the Photos app
  4. manually dragging into Photos app

Again, they are all viewable without issues in Photos on my Mac Mini running the same Somona 14.5.

If anyone has other things we could try, I'd appreciate it. I'm stumped.

Thanks for this suggestion. The photos were able to get imported to a new test library using the process you described, but when we restarted and tried again to get them into the primary library they failed.

So I'm guessing the issue is in the main photo library, but still uncertain how to go about resolving it. Would hate to start all over with a new library, as there are 40k+ photos that are viewable and without issue in that original file.
