Photos “trips”. How it is decided?

I am wondering how Apple consider “trips”.

I make lot of day trips and none of them is showing as trips in the photos.

Some separate trips are combined even though they are in two different countries.

So, my questions are

  1. How apple identify a group of image as trips.
  2. If there are multiple locations in a trip, which one it shows.
  3. how far I need to be from home location for apple photos to consider as trip

I went to Hawaii with my wife this summer and took hundreds of pictures, but Photo doesn’t automatically see it as a trip, even though it has found other “trips” this year. How I get it to refresh or manually enter in iOS18?

The Trips are similar to Memories, but are something else, Richard. Photos on iOS 18 has a new kind of Collection, called Trips, in addition to the Memories. In the collection "Trips" we can see outings and long distance voyages as ready-made photo albums or films.

One thing I like about the Memories is that I can use them as slideshows, where my Live Photos can be animated. There is no other way to view the Live Photos in a slide show.

There are very strange results for the trips. For example, Photos is showing me a trip to the city where I have been born, on the day I was born. I am seeing trips to all places where I have been living for some time. The AI in Photos does not recognize the location of previous homes as older home addresses.

For longer road trips or sailing trips I am seeing separate trips for the stop-overs along the route, but not the main part of the trip, the sailing across the Atlantic ocean or the Baltic Sea.

Memories, Trips, and the like are sort of clever things that Apple provides, probably using some proprietary AI routine, and I don't think they are telling how they do it.

But you can make your own albums and put your trips in those in the way you choose. Then you can make slideshows of those pictures. Here's an article that has more than you want, but "Albums" is a bit less than half-way down, past "Library" and "For You:"

To make your own Slideshow, you just select the pictures and then go to the 3 circles (more...) icon

and choose Slideshow.

At first I really didn't like Memories-- they never made much sense. But they've grown on me-- they catch my attention, and I look and sigh. But I've given up worrying about how they picked these pictures to put together.

Part of the problem is that I use the Title for the date-- scanned pictures still have the date of scanning, so Photos' choice by date is a mess.
