Message opens to a white or black screen, then crashes

Starting about three weeks ago, both my phone and my wife’s phone (iphone 14) have had the following imessage problems

1) imessage opens only to a white or black screen, then crashes

2) banners of new messages received, when selected, will go to the white screen

3) forced closure of imessage will not change anything

4) reset of iphone will, on occasion, allow the app to work and send and receive texts, but it requires repeated (5-10x) attempts to get one to work, and it inevitably reverts to the non-functioning mode

5) going into settings to try to turn off imessage (or facetime) doesn't work. Settings will lock up when those two apps are selected. All other functionality of settings will work once it is force closed, but it is not possible to access the settings for those two apps.
