FCP Project too big - deleted files still taking up space

I was working on a fairly small FCP project - then accidentally imported and enormous amount of files that have nothing to do with it. I deleted the files - it said they moved to the trash. I closed FCP & it's been about a week - that small project still says it's 500GB big so obviously those files are somewhere taking up space. Any idea how to delete them once and for all?
