Automatic screen brightness and keyboard backlight usually work great, but I'm having issues in changing light conditions. For example, working in an area with uneven lighting or dealing with quickly changing cloud cover can cause rapid fluctuations in brightness, which affects the keyboard backlight. I can disable automatic screen brightness, but the keyboard backlight seems linked to it, turning off unexpectedly and making typing difficult. Is there a way to adjust or disable the keyboard backlight independently from the screen brightness?

For a M series Mac the best you can do here besides a reboot

If you have issues make changes to your settings—manually adjust for better control

Tip: You can also adjust keyboard brightness right from the desktop by adding the Keyboard Brightness module to the menu bar or Control Center. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Control Center
in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). Go to Keyboard Brightness
on the right, then turn on Show in Menu Bar or Show in Control Center.
To adjust the brightness, click the Keyboard Brightness icon in the menu
bar or in Control Center.
