Not able to control volume on Samsung TV with Siri Remote

Hi! I have an Apple TV 4K 3rd gen and a 2020 Samsung The Frame TV. I’m trying to have the Siri Remote learn the IR signals of the Samsung remote, so that I can control the volume of the TV speakers using the Siri Remote.

The issue is that when doing the IR learning, the progress bar does not move. I checked using my iPhone camera, and I can see that the Samsung remote does not output IR signals, as it seems to be using only bluetooth. The Samsung remote does have an IR sensor, but this seems to be only a failover solution. I tried unpairing the Samsung remote and it will then send IR signals when pressing volume buttons, but it seems to only be sending an IR signal for requesting the bluetooth pairing process from the TV. I have not found a way to disable bluetooth on the TV or remote.

Unfortunately using HDMI CEC volume control is not possible as Samsung does not support HDMI CEC control for the TVs built in speakers.

Has anyone been able to output volume control IR signals from the Samsung remote to allow controlling volume using the Siri Remote?

Apple TV 4K, tvOS 17

After posting this, it started working! I’ll leave this here if anyone else experience the same problem.

Here is what I did:

  • Unpair the Samsung remote by holding the return button and play/pause button for 5 seconds. This will make it lose the bluetooth connection and go into IR failover mode.
  • Point the Samsung remote away from the TV or keep it behind something so that the IR signal can’t reach the TV. If the IR signal reaches the TV this will initiate the bluetooth pairing process again and disable IR.
  • Do the IR learning process on the Apple TV. If the Samsung remote lacks a dedicated mute button, you can press the volum button (avoid tilting it up or down) for mute.
  • You should now be able to control the TV volume using the Siri Remote.
