Mac OS Sonoma 14.6.1 download stops partway, is there another way?

I'm on an Intel 2020 iMac on Sonoma 14.5. I'm trying to upgrade to 14.6.1 via the App Store, and via System Preferences Software Update. It hangs part way and quits saying that it is unable to continue with the download. It says to check my internet connection which is fine for other apps and for other machines. The Apple How to Download and Install MacOS page doesn't seem to give any other options that work for getting the installer.

My question is: I've noticed that a number of help sites, ie. OSXDaily and Clarified have both pointed to this page   It's not a site I seem to be able to get to directly, so is it safe to download from here?

Background on this problem. I had been noticing that Preview wasn't opening jpegs and pdfs, saying that the file was damaged even though I could open the same file perfectly well on my other Macs. I therefore try to start the Mac in Safe Mode, but each time I tried to do that, it seemed to hang, ie. it allowed me to log into safe mode and then it would ask for my password again, but the screen would go black within 2 seconds, and did not seem to be taking in my password, so eventually I had to shut it down, after which I could not restart until turned off the power and removed the plugs for a minute and then replugged and restarted. So it is impossible to go into safe mode, have tried it several times. I was hoping to redownload Preview but that seems to be part of Sonoma, so I decided to try to update to Sonoma, but now can't seem to. I don't need to reboot Sonoma 14.5 as that's working fine apart from a problem I'm having with the Preview app, so using MacOS Recovery doesn't make sense. Any help gratefully accepted.

It confirmed it can see the Full Version of Sonoma 14.6.1

That is a good thing

The continue in Terminal and to download the Full Version 14.6.1

Use this Terminal Command

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 14.6.1

It will only download the Full Installer Application

It will place a New Application called " install Sonoma Application " in the Applications folder

The Installer is about 12.xx GB

When ready, launch the " install Sonoma Application " like any other application and follow the prompts

You are welcome and pleased that Sonoma 14.6.1 download worked

Re-reading the second part of you question

It would appear, there are more issue lurking in the background

Especially this >> " after which I could not restart until turned off the power and removed the plugs for a minute and then replugged and restarted. So it is impossible to go into safe mode "

Have you done a SMC Reset and / or NVRAM Reset

Perform each 3x consecutively

Still not relief

Download the Application Etrecheck ( External Link ) directly from the Developer.

The Application is Not a " Silver Bullet " but only a tool to examine the Hardware / Software used on this computer

This is a Diagnostic Tool that makes no changes to the computer.

It makes a coherent and readable inventory of both the Hardware and Software used on the computer

A - I do not see a specific reason why Preview is having issues opening jpegs and pdfs

A - That is apart,  from using a Proxy associated with Cisco AnyConnect

A - Then,  there is the recent 2024-08-11 Kernel Panics 4x since that same date

A - The fact the computer is experiencing  >>
