If they were purchased from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller then they are authentic, if not then they are most likely fake based on the size of the counterfeit market. With fake AirPods you may experience:

  • Poor Audio quality
  • Noise Cancellation may not work
  • Find My may not work
  • May have trouble pairing and keeping a connection
  • Poor Bluetooth range
  • No AppleCare support

In the end, it really does not matter. If you are happy with the AirPods, then it makes no difference if they are fake or not. If you want to make sure they are original, then it will require a purchase from Apple or Authorized Apple Seller. The serial numbers are easier to counterfeit than the actual device, so checking the serial number is not going to tell you anything.
