How do you get rid of non-existent unread iMessages on apple watch face complication?

My MacBook and iPhone both show 0 unread iMessages, yet the message complication on the face of my Apple Watch shows 4 unread messages. Can't figure out how to zero this out. I even tried asking Siri to read my remaining unread messages, but that doesn't work.

Please do a forced restart of your Apple Watch and iPhone. A forced restart is more than just turning your devices off and on. If you’re unfamiliar with the process for doing a forced restart, please review the steps and illustrations in the Apple Support article I linked below.

Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

Force restart Apple Watch - Apple Support

It’s also important to understand that Watch complications do not sync in real time (instantly) because of battery consumption issues. the complication is more a guideline to keep you aware of specific concerns and the most recent update between iPhone and Apple Watch. Depending on the complication, it’ll update no more than about 6 times every 60 minutes.
