Unpaired AirTag will not pair again

Hi, Just went through this with two AirTags, what I did was:

1. Take off the metallic cover with the apple logo.
2. Take out the battery
3. Place it again and without placing the cover, press on the battery and try to move it clockwise while pressing the batter, it makes a sound so you will know the AirTag got the battery.
4. Repeat the third step until you hear a different sound (it took 5 times with one and 9 times with the second airtag)
5. After the different sound it immediately popped on my iphone

Unless you actively remove this tag from your Apple ID, no one else can pair it with their's. Replacing the battery, or even resettig it will not change that fact.

Well, with the steps you took, that is a real possibility. Hopefully that person will admit doing so and remove their ID. If not, this tag will be useless to you.

Should no one own up, you should remove the tag's battery so the tag will be useless to them as well.

Then the AirTag was still paired with your Apple ID ... and resetting it, as I mentioned, would be the right solution. Looks like the OP's tag was still paired with theirs (not what I was being led to believe) and that solution worked for them as well.

So, it looks like this tag was still paired with your Apple ID after all ... and, thanks to rroske_23 for chiming in with the correct solution for this case, by resetting the tag.

Sorry, based on what I gleaned from your posts, I was assuming that this tag was paired with another's ID. I'm glad that was not the case.

What you gave the OP is how to reset an AirTag. If their tag is now paired with an Apple ID that is not theirs, resetting it will not help. Of course, should that not be the case, then a reset would be the correct solution.
