Whether my iPhone 8 or my friends 13- the flash drive isn’t being recognized. Is it possible the flash drive is full and that’s why? Seems to be a reoccurring problem judging by the questions.

Here is the usual sequence:

The flash drive should use either FAT or an Apple file system format.
Corrupted or incompatible FAT file systems are not particularly unusual, either. Reformatting may be warranted.
A different path uses SMB share on a local Mac, Linux, Windows, NAS, or other local file server:

Are you talking about the iPhone’s internal storage, or an external drive you have plugged in to the iPhone? An external drive needs an app to access it.
To view the internal storage go to Settings/General/iPhone Storage.
