Have Apple 15 Pro Max. Constantly getting hold near terminal message then nothing after performing the double clicking side button. It seems that the communication with the POS terminal sequence is flawed since the “double click side button” feature was introduced.

Double-click the side button first, then after authentication with Face ID, then you will see "Hold Near Reader" that's when you hold the phone near the POS, not before.
Do not hold the phone near the POS first then "double-click".
I have never had issues when "double-click the side" button was introduced. Also, if you have trouble with the required "double-click" speed between clicks, you can slow it down in settings/accessibility/side button
