deleting email on ipad deletes from all accounts - not what I want

My wife and I share an iPad. We use the same email client, the default Apple mail that came with the device. We have separate mail accounts. Recently, we realized that if a received mail is addressed to both of our accounts and I delete it from my account, it disappears from my wife's account, as well. That is not what I want to happen, obviously. Is there a way to fix this, so if I delete an email, it's only deleted from my account?

Outside of Educational and Enterprise establishments, iPad and iPhone are principally intended to be a single-user device - and are not intended to shared in the same manner as you may be accustomed when using a Windows PC or Mac computer - which has multiple user profiles/accounts.

When multiple Users share a single iOS/iPadOS device, you can expect to encounter unexpected behaviours - along with unintentional data-sharin.

You would be best advised to use the iPad as intended - as a single-user device. If this is impractical, you will need to consider using a third-party Mail App - or at least for one or other of you.
