I’m looking for a very basic program that might be considered a SmartBoard or Bolton board so that I can keep track of doctor appointments and other important dates and just an overall agenda program

You can use Calendar for your appointments and Reminders for (surprise, surprise) your reminders. Come the release of iPad 18, I believe there will be more integration between the two.
If you want a whiteboard sort of app, consider the included Free Form app. And Notes is great.
