2014 iMac recovery mode 403 error on reinstall

I have my grandads old iMac and I have erased the HD in recovery mode to reinstall the os (seems to be Yosemite). When i try to sign into the App Store to reinstall I get an error every time that says ‘the server gave an error during download: 403 forbidden.

any idea what I can do?

Do you have another Mac available to you? You need to make a bootable installer:

Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

I believe you can still get the Yosemite installer from Apple:

https://updates.cdn-apple.com/2019/cert/061-41343-20191023-02465f92-3ab5-4c92-bfe2-b725447a070d/InstallMacOSX.dmg

And the command line instruction from the bootable installer instructions should work if you just substitute "/Applications/<the actual path to your Yosemite installer>" for "Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ El\ Capitan.app"

But don't feel like you have to reinstall Yosemite - either of the 2014 iMac (early 2014 slim unibody or late 2014 retina) can run up to macOS Big Sur.
