Sorting photos in albums

On my MacBook Pro (OS Sonoma 14.5) in Photos, I have always had all my albums sorted in date order (View > Keep sorted by oldest first) but they will no longer sort that way.

I tried sorting by title and that has no effect either.

This is a critical issue for me so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

just a few more thoughts on the sorting problem - I am not quite sure, what you are trying to sort - the list of albums or the items in each album? When you use the sort command while viewing a folder with albums, it will sort the list of albums, but not the photos inside the albums.

You can only sort the photos or videos in the albums you have created yourself, not in any album created automatically by Photos.

Sorting the photos or videos in one of your own albums should work.

  • When you sort an album by the date, the items will be sorted by the capture date, ascending or descending. If the photos are appearing to be out of order, you may want to check the timezone assigned to the photos. When photos is showing us a capture date in the Info of a photo, we are having to take the timezone into account, when comparing two dates. If the photos have not been imported dat the same time from the same camera, the timezones may differ. Without knowing the timeline for each photo, it is hard to compare the date and time. You can see the timezone assigned to a photo when you use the command "Adjust date & Time" look at the closest city shown in this panel.

Well, that's weird. It certainly works for me-- I just checked. right-clicked on "My Albums" to get a pop-up menu, and then chose Sort.

So something's messing that up for you. Try these things:

  • Restart the computer (of course)
  • Re-start in Safe Mode. This bypasses certain potentially disruptive processes. Safe Mode is different for different computers, so see this:

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

  • Make a new user and see if the same problem recurs with it
  • Use another library if you have one, or make a small test Library with a few pictures in it and see if the same thing happens. You can create a new Library by closing Photos and then option-clicking on the Photos icon.
  • Rebuild your Photos Library--close Photos and re-launch by option-command-clicking the app icon.

The idea is to find out if the problem is with the Library, with your account, or with caches and login items, and stuff like that. One of these steps may fix the problem, but their failure to work also helps figure out what's happening.
