Can my Apple Watch detect a fall if it's in my pocket or on a lanyard around my neck?

I find wearing the watch uncomfortable. Can the watch detect a fall if it's in my pocket or on a lanyard around my neck? I'm not sure what method the detector uses to detect a fall, so have no idea whatsoever if it has to be on my wrist. Anyone know anything about this?

If you want the Apple Watch to perform to specification and as marketed, it needs to be worn on your wrist. Please review the information in the Apple Support article I’ve linked to below. Please note, even wearing the watch incorrectly on your wrist can affect the performance of a wrist watch.

I strongly suspect Jeff Donald is correct but if this is a health issue, you may want to contact Apple support to be sure.

But again, if it is a serious health issue, please talk to your doctor. If it's too uncomfortable to wear the watch, they may recommend a non-Apple device that can be worn off the wrist. Your health and safety must come first.
