Can I replace my 1 TB Fusion Drive HDD with a new SSD without splitting the Fusion Drive first ? (because splitting is not possible)

Hi, I have a late 2015 27'' iMac with 1TB Fusion Drive. Normally I was using my macOS through an SSD connected to the USB and I was sooo happy about the performance of my computer. One day it restarted itself while in sleep mode and... never be able to start again;

Symptoms:

  • Apple logo appears when I connect my iOS containing external SSD, but the progress bar never fills up (it stays blank forever)
  • Question mark appears when I do not connect my external SSD with iOS.
  • Command+R does not work and OPT+Command+R do not continue after some point during start up
  • Apple diagnostics say my computer is ok
  • I resetted my NVRAM and tried all possible startup key combinations including Command+S (I cannot reach to Terminal (some weird data log appears and no place to write a command)
  • Apple authorized service cannot do anything since my computer is considered as vintage

I talked to the apple expert, and he said most probably my HDD is dead (it is silent now and I do not hear it anymore).

Do above symptoms root from the dead HDD?, even all my iOS data is in my external SSD?

Will replacing my internal HDD to a new internal SSD solve the problem?

I cannot split my Fusion Drive since I cannot reach to the Terminal app, will that be a problem?

What symptoms do you think I will have right after replacing my HDD with a new Sata3 SSD?

I like my computer and want it back, thanks to all in advance

iMac 27″, macOS 12.7

Ok. In the end I took my computer to a PC repair guy.

Here is what he says 'We have identified an issue with the DMI communication between the PCH chipset and the processor, which is a common problem in these models. We can attempt to repair it by replacing the PCH controller. However, another concern is the potential delamination of the layers on the motherboard. This could lead to complications during the removal of the chipset, and if the layers are damaged, it may not be possible to install a new chipset. In such a case, the motherboard would be beyond repair, and the only viable solution would be to replace it entirely.'

Then the wise thing to do is to replace the computer!! Don't spend $$$ on 11 year old antiquated technology. It simply does not make sense. If you cannot afford a new Mac you have a lot of alternatives. First is:

  • Apple Refurbished: Zero downside as they are identical to new, have the same warranty as new, are eligible for AppleCare and can save hundreds of $$$. You can find the Refurbished Store at apple.com then scroll to the bottom of the page and select the Refurbished store.
  • Don't buy a new iMac: You are not "locked" into an iMac. Buy a Mac mini which is much more powerful than your 2015 and does not have any moving parts other than fans. They all come with SSDs, get one with at least 1TB SSD and 16GB of RAM and you will have a nice computer. Then buy any display you want to go with it, display start at <$100 so cost is not a deterrent.
  • Buy a used Mac from a reputable reseller: Navigate to Macsales.com which is a trusted reseller of used Macs. They are fully checked out and are ready for year of service. You can save a LOT of money this way. Never ever buy a used Mac from:

EBay

Craigslist

Nextdoor

Marketplace

Local PC shop

An acquaintance or friend

Why, because these machines are NOT set up correctly in most cases per Apple's advice in What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac which means they NEVER will work correctly. Also, in many cases you will have the same issue you had with the logic board you bought, it just won't work!

If the hard drive that is part of the Fusion Drive is dead – or you have pulled it out and replaced it with a SSD – you have essentially split the Fusion Drive (as in, "bye bye, data").

I don't know if there is something left on the SSD part of the original Fusion Drive that is confusing the Mac. If the repair shop had removed the original SSD at the same time that they replaced the dead HDD with a SATA SSD, the result might have been better. (There would have been no "blade" SSD with part of a volume on it, to maybe trick the Mac into thinking that it still had a Fusion Drive.)

But it sounds like there may be something wrong beyond that, if the Mac is willing to start booting from an external drive, but then hangs while booting from the external drive.

P.S.: The Mac operating system is macOS, not iOS. iOS is the name of the operating system on the iPhone.

Hi,

I agree with Apple Expert, your iMac HDD is dead. Old fusion drive iMac is separate installed as two drives, HDD and SSD. You could replace internal dead HDD and SSD with your external SSD, though it's quite hard work.

It's quite easy to select startup drive with press and hold the Option key as you press the power button to start up your Mac and select external SSD as startup drive which could works.

Ok, I have changed my HDD... and nothing changed at all (except my heart attack). My new SSD is empty of course, but I was already operating my iOS from an external SSD, and I created a recovery usb flash also (see below pic)

When I select one of the options, I have this screen below, and freeze:

Recovery does not work, internet recovery does not work, Apple diagnostics say my computer is OK.

Can you please help? What might be the solution to this?

Latest news here: I ordered a new logic board from ebay. I installed it myself to my imac with joy. I turned on my imac and voila: the same problem continues to exist...

Now what should I do??? I changed the whole main unit!! The imac starts with chime, and shows all my external disks containing macOS, and when I click on them there is a blank bar on the screen forever. One thing I discovered is when I select a disk to start, IMAC cuts the energy from all USB ports. I was using a cable mouse with red light and I found out that when I select a start up disk, the light of mouse and also the caps lock light on the keyboard turns off, screen remaining with a blank progress bar. Interestingly the same thing happens with internet recovery: internet recovery starts with a turning globe and when ready to start the progress bar, all the energy from the USB ports is cut!! Command+R with the new logic board is not working either.

And all these same symptoms happening with the new logic board!!

I am thinking what can be the cause:

1) Can RAM result in this?

2) Can little 128gb Fusion Drive on the logic board result in this? (because I installed it on the new logic board again, maybe it was unnecessary)

3) Can my CPU result in this? (but why?, my IMAC starts and it comes up to a point)

Nothing left to do in my opinion, help me!!

First never ever take a Mac to a PC guy, they are not correctly trained. Please take your computer to an Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area. If you don't know of any then click AppleCare Contact Info.

Next, I know you would like to fix the computer however please remember it is 11 years old now and is not only technically obsolete it is also classed as vintage by Apple meaning parts are not available. Finally it cannot run current versions of Mac OS.

I would strongly recommend spending your money on its replacement. A Mac mini will run circles around a 2015 iMac that is running perfectly. All you need is the MM and a display and you are set.
