Can I boot iMac from external SSD?

I think my 2017 imacs hard drive may be bad ?

3.8 GHz quad core intel core i5

running ventura 13.7.2

i was getting the flashing ? folder and I ran through the different fixes. ended up booting from slow external ssd to see if i could get the computer working. it currently running but slow.

i was getting this notice - "this disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors. this disk has a hardware problem than can't be repaired. ...................."

i'm not a expert on computers for sure but i guessing my hard drive is shot?

i'm also assuming if i boot it from an external ssd it will still operate slower than factory speed?

i also read that the hard drives are replaceable in the imac?

i've not taken apart an imac before so not sure how difficult the task is.

any thoughts would be welcome. obviously trying to avoid a new mac purchase .

thanks owen

Running from an external Thunderbolt 3 SSD should be indistinguishable from that iMac's internal storage.

Yes, with difficulty, but first determine what you have. Fusion Drive, or...? For example the hard disk portion of Fusion Drive may be faulty. In any event it's probably fixable, but in the meantime install macOS on an external Thunderbolt 3 (USB 3, with the lightning bolt symbol) SSD and boot from it.

On an 8 year old Mac it really makes very little sense to spend money on it. Have you considered replacing it with a new M4 Mac mini, they start at $499 ($799-999 for a very nice one with adequate storage) and another $300 for a brand new display and you have a killer system. Far better than your 2017 iMac could ever be.

This is the direction I would move to rather than investing hundreds of dollars in an obsolete iMac.
