GPS is falling asleep and can be woke with motion

Hi I have an issue with my IPad I am using the Navionics Boating app and when my iPad is very still (not moving) it appears the GPS is going to sleep (speed stops working displays 0). When I move or touch the Device it comes back. This also happens on my IPhone.

it appears that that this is some kind of battery saving mode. Is there a way to turn it off? BTW it also happens in other apps that use the GPS for speed.

iPad Pro, iPadOS 17

By definition, when stationary your speed will be zero. Many GPS receivers will indicate zero-velocity when nearly stationary - the threshold often be being more obvious when accuracy of the computed position or DoP is poor.

You may experience improved performance if you consider using a specialist third-party GNSS receiver - such as BadElf, Garmin GLO or GNS3000. These are often employed with Marine or Aviation applications.

If your iPad has a specific performance issue, you might be well advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page.

Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases from Apple devices using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

This happens to me as well when using AquaMaps and I bought this iPad specifically for this purpose as have many others.

The GPS going to sleep while navigating the waterways is actually quite dangerous. And because of this danger it is important that the boating community become aware that the iPad with GPS is not a proper solution for their navigating needs.

Thanks for the reply. My mistake by saying that the iPad is still (not moving). What I meant to convey is that the iPad IS moving but it is on a very stable surface. As soon as I touch/tap it the speed starts displaying and then goes to “sleep”after a few second’s been an a stable surface. If the boat rocks and rolls it never happens. There’s nothing wrong with the device, as this happens to all my apple devices I have (iPhone, other IPads).

I was already thinking maybe put it on a “watch winder” that moves all the time. I have put it close to my foot and tap it every few seconds and it will work fine.
