closing the lid of the display is a request for the Mac to go to sleep. if you want to use it in closed display mode, you MAY be able to, provided you meet all the conditions:
connect the external display.
connect a stable external power source, this does NOT work on battery alone.
connect an external keyboard and pointing device.
THEN try closing the lid

Closing the lid is a requirement to use a second external display on a M3 MacBook Pro, with the base M3 chip, running Sonoma 14.6 (??) or later.
That implies that there must be a way to close the lid without putting the laptop “permanently” to sleep.
