Why am I not able to upload jpeg images to Facebook?

I've built graphics on my iMac, totally using Apple software - no downloaded images. I save my work as jpeg images, but when I try to load it on Facebook, they reject it as an HEIC. This just started happening in the last few days.

Maybe the file suffix is erroneously .jpg but the image is, in fact, .heic (i.e. HEIF codec)?

If you open such image in Preview.app, what does its Tools > Show Inspector report? In the screenshot below I deliberately changed .heic suffix to the wrong .jpg but it is still HEIF image.

A real .jpg is like this:

...Ventura and Sonoma Preview.app has a bug which in batch export, exports images with the wrong suffix like this.

HEIF/HEIC is what your iPhone will shoot if you have the camera configured for high efficiency and not most compatible (JPEG).

I was using Image Capture to pull images from my iPhone 15 Pro Max and they were HEIC before I made that first paragraph change. Could this be a contributing factor for you? MacOS does not automatically generate HEIF/HEIC images unless told to do so using the Convert Image Quick Action (HEIF), or specifically exported from Preview in that format.

I don't think that's it. I'm definitely exporting from Preview as .jpeg - neither .jpeg nor .png will work. Furthermore, I tried running an image through Affinity Photo and exporting it as .jpeg and got the same error message on Facebook - the message is:

Your file can't be uploaded: tempImage0ZdsHF.heic

Maybe it's a Facebook problem, but I don't see anyone else having this problem.

Thanks. they are .jpg - As I understand it, they are the same. ""JPG" and "JPEG" are two equivalent file extensions that both refer to the exact same digital image format. JPEG is an abbreviation for "Joint Photographic Experts Group," which is a tech industry group that created the JPEG image format widely in use in digital cameras, social media, and on the web." The .jpg started because in the old days, Windows/DOS would only accept three character file names.

Thanks for the input. I'd read about iPhone images, but my iPhone is not part of this. For instance, I might create an image in Keynote, then open that in Preview, do a little editing and then save it as .jpeg. I've been doing it this way for years without a problem. It's just been in the last few days that I'm getting this HEIC rejection thing from Facebook. It might be a setting on my iMac, but I can't find it.

Yes, you are completely correct, but that doesn't mean a website uploader tool the got off GitHub isn't smart enough to know that.
