I have tried to use "messages" on MacBook to text to android but it doesn't work. Is there something I can do other than what has been posted on the community before, which doesn't work?
Email instead.
Or maybe some other messaging service.

You don't have to reply from the phone.
But SMS/MMS messages are a cell phone thing. Your Mac is not a cell phone, and cannot send or receive those messages directly. If you want to send or receive SMS and MMS messages from your Mac, you will need to

You cannot send them directly from the Mac to Android. Macs are not cellular capable and Android devices don't do iMessaging which is the WiFi service for Apple devices only. If you want to send Mac to Android you have to use the iPhone as the go-between or use a third-party app. According to the line I quoted about (please read at least that sentence if you refuse to actually read the support article) you can receive and send messages using your iPhone as the go-between.
I am quickly getting the impression I probably shouldn't even have bothered with this one.

I don't know how all the plumbing works; however, I can attest that if one sets up Text Message Forwarding as outlined previously, one can receive and send messages to Android users. I do it regularly.
Some of my friends haven't yet seen the (blue)light!

Follow the directions in the link Limnos provided above. That will enable you to send SMS messages from your MBA.

On your iPhone, go to Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding and add your Mac. This should be quite straightforward if your Mac and your iPhone are logged into the same Apple ID.

Setting things up that way is how you make it work. If you can't reply from your Mac and everything is set up the way I explained and the way it says in the article linked to, try this.
Sign out of iMessage on all of your devices. Sign back in on your iPhone. Once iMessage is activated there, activated in on your Mac and any other devices. Once it's activated on your Mac, go back to the iPhone and go to Settings>Messages>Text Message Forwarding and add your Mac. Make sure that under Settings>Messages>Send & Receive>You Can Receive iMessages to and Reply From that both your mobile number and your Apple ID are selected.
This has nothing to do with iCloud, by the way.
I don't have time right now to do the work for you but it is possible that iCloud online (using a web browser which I presume Android has) would let you receive directly from a Mac. Of course then you have to use the browser interface at the Android end, not a messaging app.
i guess i didn't make it clear that i get the same text on my laptop that i get on the phone. it's just that i can't reply to a text sent from and android phone via my laptop and would like to be able to do that.
i have been busy and haven't read the latest posts thoroughly so will do that and if the suggestions don't work, i will just continue dealing with the problem the way i have been.

once again my request is misunderstood. i do not use iCloud. i want only to send text messages from my MacBook to android phones. if no one has a method to do this one thing, don’t bother.
