macOS Monterey 12.7.6 won't install on my iMac

I'm running Monterey 12.7.2 on a 2018 iMac. I have tried numerous times to download and install the latest update for Monterey. All seems to be done correctly with restarts. When it looks like it is finished, I still see 12.7.2 as the OS. Have others had this problem? Should I just update to OS 13 and forget about it? Do I try to install in safe mode? Thanks

Good question g_wolfman. I did not go out searching for the antivirus tools except maybe Avast. All the others were offered as "freebies" from my financial institutions over the past decade. Obviously I had no idea that they might cause problems. I will uninstall per BDAqua's suggestion then do another etrecheck to see what the situation is.

Thanks for all you take on my situation.

Hi Old Toad...been trying to uninstall Hands Off, Trusteer, Avast and Webroot. When Avast and Webroot asks for my password (which is the same for unlocking my computer) they do not accept it. This is getting weirder and weirder... This has happened with trying to update a program for my printer, too. How can it not accept my password?

Hands Off just went into the trash as well as the Library preferences for Trusteer since I couldn't find the application but the icon is still in my system preferences. I have no idea how many of their little devils are still left behind. What a mess.

Depends on the Apps, many have additional files scattered about, how I'd handle that is transfer them all then use one of these two to get rid 0f the Apps you don't want...

App Cleaner & Uninstaller, which is my goto cleanup app…

AppCleaner…

Data should be OK to pick & choose manly what to transfer.

Nope it's too new & the Mini would be too new, butdecent monitors are reasonable...

The following older iMac models can be used as an external display when plugged into another older Mac model.

iMac models introduced in 2011, 2012, 2013, and mid 2014

To use any of these iMac models as an external display:

  • The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
  • The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
  • The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 cable.

24-inch and 27-inch iMac models introduced in 2009 and 2010

To use any of these iMac models as an external display:

  • The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
  • The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
  • The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Mini DisplayPort cable.

I get the same issue.

I am attempting to install Monterey 12.7.6. and it looks successful.

But then I get the 'System Update' notification again saying it needs to be installed.

So no errors or pop ups on install and the iMac restarts with no issues, looks good but then tries to install the same version again.

I have removed all Avast apps on my iMac.

My iMac details:

iMac (Retina 5k, 27-inch, Late 2015)

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Hi Jodes1976...You probably need to do what I did which was to run your Mac in Recovery mode..use the utilities...do first aid and find out if you have a problem with your disk. I found that my disk was corrupted. I would have had to erase everything and start over then uninstall the apps dealing with malware, virus protection etc and hope that the OS could then be upgraded. At least you were able to remove the antivirus apps. I couldn't even do that and even if I did a complete erasure there was no guarantee that my disk still wasn't corrupted. I figured that since my Mac was 7 years old, it was time for a new one. I think I would have only been able to upgrade the OS to 13 at most with my 2017. With your 2015 you are at the end, too.

Have you used AppCleaner to totally remove the apps in question? There may be some hidden gremlins that are keeping you from updating completely.

Check out System Report>Software>Installations.

n Disk Utility>View, select Show all Devices, highlight the top left entry.

Run Disk First Aid on all items in the left panel, from top down.

Are you running any VPN, Anti-Virus, or Cleaning apps?

As I recall the cure was uninstalling AV ware & reinstalling the OS.

Hi Old Toad...did what you said and then rebooted in safe mode. Still no luck. I'm stuck on 12.7.2.

Also, I have had this error message come up everytime I restart my Mac - maybe happening about 6 months ago. I just figured it was because the external time machine hard drive might not have been ejected properly at shut down. I've always just clicked ignored...BUT...through this whole process without any drives attached, I still get this message. I do have a separate alias disk image which I've had for personal items for years. Through all updates, there has been no problems until now. Maybe it is causing problems?

I know I have an old Mac and it's probably time to get a new one, but it still works fine. Just don't know what the hang-up is. Whatever you can do to help would be appreciated.

Looks like my disk is too bad to fix. Using Recovery Mode-Disk Utilities-First aid, it came out as having failed. I guess I only have three options: Erase the disk and start over, go to an Apple store and have them fix it or get a new Mac. Mine is 7 years old now so maybe it's time. The only issue is if I get a new Mac and transfer data from the cloud or time machine, I'll still get apps that I don't want or shouldn't have like all the anti-virus apps. I've attached a pic to see if what I'm saying is right.

There is no 2018 iMac, so not sure if you have a 2017 or 2019. Only relevant because the 2017 can go to Ventura and the 2019 to Sonoma (and maybe it will support Sequoia too...haven't looked at that supported model list)

Some safe mode troubleshooting is certainly worthwhile to figure out and maybe solve whatever issue is preventing the update form installing. But after that is sorted, I'd upgrade regardless. Monterey is about to go to security patch-only support when Sequoia comes out this fall.
