This starting happening as soon as I updated to fcpx 10.8.1. Tried several times editing duration in settings, deleting event/library & starting new project, rebooting iMac, & replacing with different images.

image duration defaults to 10 sec up to 5 minutes per image
Please explain this is more detail. I really don’t understand what you’re trying to say. What selection seeing do you have in preferences? What exactly are you doing and what happens when you do it? Please post screenshots showing what happens explaining what you expect to happen.
Hold Cmd+Opt when launching FCP, delete preference files. See if that helps.
