It's probably a setting.

  • Swipe up for the Control Centre
  • Look for an icon of a padlock with a circular arrow arrow around it
  • If it's orange and the padlock is shut, then automatic rotation is disabled.
  • Click it to enable rotation. It should open the padlock and turn white.

If you still suspect that it's actually a hardware issue with the "three‑axis gyro", then open the "Measure" app and tap the "Level". If it's nearly flat, this displays two big white dots on a black background that behave somewhat like a bubble level on top of a camera tripod. When the dots overlap, the background turns green.

If it's nearly vertical it shows a screen that is black on the bottom and white on top. If it goes zero degrees (vertical) the bottom turns green.

This Measure/Level tool works even if Auto Rotation is disabled in the Control Centre.
