iPhone 12 ProMax screen super dim

All of the settings are correct. Yes, the accessibility settings also. The screen is almost impossible to read outside in the sun. When you turn the brightness down to the lowest setting, the screen goes completely black. This was actually a problem because I did that and couldn't get it back for a while. Only way to get it back was to turn it off, and mine at the same time, then mimic on her screen what I did on mine (for the screen position of the settings).

I thought it was the backlight had gone out. But then she noticed whenever she did a screenshot, the screen brightness would momentarily go to normal brightness for a split second. So it obviously works. Done lots of power resets, and a hard reset but nothing changes it.

I'm hoping someone has seen this before and there's some trick to reset it and that I'm not going to hear "you need to get the screen replaced".
