Getting error code 9937 upon dumping Photos from iPhone to MacBook.

I'm attempting to dump all the photos on my phone onto my macbook. It's giving me an error code 9937 for what looks like all my live photos.

I am unable to find a setting in the photo app on the computer or on the phone to convert them, either upon import or before then.

This is extremely frustrating as I'm tryin to do a bunch of file maintenance and am unable to do so even though I'm using apple proprietary software AND hardware throughout the chain.

What am I missing?

One more thing - there are two possible reasons for the com.apple.imageCapture error - 9937, it is mostly either a permissions error or a file format error.

  • Wich system version is running on your Mac? If your Mac is running a very old system version, it cannot handle items in the High efficiency format, see: Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support. To solve this, you may need to upgrade the system on the Mac to macOS 10.13 Sierra or later, if possible. If it is not possible, change the Settings > Photos > Download to Mac or PC to "Most compatible".
  • The Photos Library on your Mac needs to be in a compatible location, where the library cannot become damaged and where Photos can access it. If your Photos Library is on an external drive, the file system format must be compatible with Photos, see: Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac - Apple Support Mattis suggestion will take care of this kind of error.

Try to use Applications/Image Capture to copy the Live Photos from the iPhone to the Mac.

...

The key metadata item in Live photos is ContentIdentifier. It has to be identical in both the image and the movie. Even the file names do not have to match. When importing such pair, Photos.app shows only the imported image's filename. Also the matching movie can be from a completely different footage such as .mp4.

exiftool -a -G1 -s -ContentIdentifier .
======== ./2024-0305-1201-37.mov
[Keys]          ContentIdentifier               : A3E5437B-626A-42FE-9B6E-1791337877BF
======== ./2024-0305-1201-37.jpg
[Apple]         ContentIdentifier               : A3E5437B-626A-42FE-9B6E-1791337877BF

On the other hand Android "Motion Photos" has the movie embedded inside the the .jpg and can be extracted with exiftool:

exiftool -b -p '${trailer;s/.*(\0\0\0\x1cftypisom)/$1/s}' -ext jpg -w mp4 PXL_20230118_124418216.MP.jpg
    1 output files created

ls
PXL_20230118_124418216.MP.jpg	PXL_20230118_124418216.MP.mp4

Does that error apply only when importing to Photos.app in earlier than OS X High Sierra 10.13 where .heic HEIF image and H.265 HEVC movie support was added?

Can Image Capture.app import such files in OS X Sierra 10.12 and earlier although the user can not open them?
