How to use two iPads on the same Apple ID

I am about to buy a second larger capacity iPad but don't want to lose access to my first iPad. Can I set up two iPads using the same Apple ID? Ideally I should like to use my older iPad to store what is on there already but not add to it and my newer one to add new material. I should like to retain my current email address but not download emails to my older iPad. How do I do that?! Thank you in advance for your answers!

Ideally, all of your devices that are used by a single user will be signed-in with same AppleID - as this is how they are designed to be used.


If adding another iPad to your collection of devices, but you don't wish to transfer data from an existing device, simply set-up your iPad from the initial "hello" screen - but do not use QuickStart to transfer - or an existing backup to restore data and setting when prompted:

Turn on and set up iPad - Apple Support


As for accessing email, simply add your email accounts to the new iPad after initial setup:

Add and remove email accounts on iPad - Apple Support


In most cases, your email is kept and synchronised on your Mail Provider's Mail Server - and a copy of mail messages are downloaded to devices where the account(s) have been configured.
