How can I view footage on my iPad 10th gen with my micro sd card?

Hi, I’m hoping someone can help me work out how to view footage on my iPad 10th gen with my micro sd card. I have the adapter USB-C to SD Card Reader that I’ve recently bought from the Apple shop. I rang Apple prior to purchasing this card reader to make cure I bought the right one, hence why I bought this usb in ?. My issue is when I go to files on my iPad to view the footage nothing comes up. I’ve tries Dropbox to view it still nothing.

Does anyone know what could be the problem?

Thank you in advance.

Ensure that the Files App sidebar is open - if necessary, tap the sidebar icon at upper left of the Files App Window to expose the sidebar:

With the sidebar open - and your SD Card Reader connected to the iPad (and with an SD Card inserted) - you should see the SD Card in the Sidebar (illustrated here as Untitled). Tap this icon to open and navigate the SD Card.

Start here:

Connect external storage devices to iPad - Apple Support

Direct import of photos and videos from your camera SD Card to your Photo library is possible - subject to a couple of caveats:

  • the SD Card must be correctly formatted as FAT, FAT32 or exFAT (FAT64)
  • stored photos are stored within the expected DCIM folder

Import photos using Apple camera adapters - Apple Support

If you are unable to use the direct photo import feature, you can still manually access and copy photos from the SD Card using the iPad’s built-in Files App. To do so, just open the Files App - and in the Sidebar you will see your SD Card in the list of Locations. If necessary, open the sidebar by tapping the sidebar icon at top-left of the Files App Window. Photos can be copied to the iPad Photo Library, or copied to a folder of your choice either on your iPad or elsewhere.

Be assured, if using iPadOS 17.x, we have the same Files App. What may differ is how your Files App is configured to show files - be this as Tiles (as shown in your screenshot) or as a List with filename extensions (per my own screenshots).

If your iPad is not operating as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)

Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

If the problem persists after performing the restart, it may be necessary to reset your iPad settings. While this reset will not cause any loss of data, as a precaution, it is always wise to ensure that you have a current iCloud or iTunes backup before performing the reset:

When you are happy to proceed, you can perform the reset from iPad settings:

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings

If the problem still doesn’t clear, the next step is to reset the iPad to factory settings:

Otherwise, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Support link at top-right or bottom-left of this page. Alternatively and perhaps easier, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might also visit the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad and SD Card Adapter - and you can explore your available options:

Hi, thanks for replying to my message. When I open files on my iPad which is the 10th generation one there is no browse anywhere in this app not at the top middle or bottom, on my iPhone it is but not on this iPad. The usb-c to sd card reader I bought for this iPad has a different connection so I can use it on my iPhone. I can open my photos and still my sd card doesn’t show up it’s like I haven’t connected the usb at all. I’m trying to view my car camera footage on my iPad but nothing at all happens. I’m starting to wonder if I bought the right connection for this iPad. Could you please let me know if I have the right connection etc.

Hi, you would think it would be straight forward however I don’t have the same files app as you do, it’s weird. If I click on the black and blue writing box thingy in the top left hand cnr this is what I see. No where in my files app does it have any name or sd card name just what these pictures show with 2 more words after the word purple which are home and important. Do you see my dilemma. I’m just lost why I haven’t got what you have in your files app.
