How can I stop photos from syncing to my son's iPad?

Hi. I’m getting frustrated - I want my son’s iPad to be set up with my iCloud WITHOUT everything being uploaded there. When I set it up a year or so back it was good, but I just saw hundreds of my photos on his iPad. How can I prevent that?

Sharing an AppleID between users is a bad idea.

Your son should have his own AppleID - in fact, every user should have their own AppleID. This is essential to maintain intended separation of activities and to avoid unintended sharing of unintended information and data. Done properly, you’ll not have any issues with your data and content appearing on your child's device(s).

You may find this information to be helpful with setting-up an AppleID for a minor - and in considering appropriate controls while continuing to share Apps and paid Apple services if you should choose to do so:

When you sign-out from your AppleID on your Son's iPad, you will be offered the opportunity to download iCloud files. You must decline this opportunity - as otherwise your files and sensitive data will be merged with the AppleID that is next used to sign-in to iCloud.

If a local copy of your iCloud data is saved when signing-out and subsequently merged, there is no easy method to reverse the process.

Also, the main reason for him using mine is that he needs my thumb to purchase anything. Can that still be done using his own account?

I haven't examined everything in detail, but it sounds like that's possible.

You can turn on Screen Time, and then use Parental Controls to keep him from making App Store purchases. You can also lock the Screen Time settings with a passcode (which you don't tell him), so that he can't simply turn off the restrictions.

You may want to consider using Family Sharing – with the controls set up so that he can't automatically buy apps with your purchase method, but instead has to go through Ask to Buy.
