AppleTV on LG webOS "Couldn't Load Video"

This is a strange problem. I have tried everything that I have found in Google searches on this issue.

If I play any AppleTV content, it briefly plays the Apple intro, then tries to load the stream. But this fails every time, and it shows the error "Couldn't Load Video / Check your internet connection then try again." What is strange, is this only happens when the Apple intro is played. If I play an episode that is already in the middle (so no intro sequence) it plays fine. Everything else works. As noted, I can play episodes that are already in progress. But I can't play anything from the beginning. To be clear, my internet connection is fine. I can play everything in my Apple TV library. Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Youtube, Youtube TV, Disney+, Max, and Peacock all work. LG channels work. It is just shows on Apple TV, that play the Apple TV intro sequence.

What I've tried:

  • Checked that the TV has the latest software
  • Restart TV
  • Delete & reinstall the Apple TV app
  • Unplug and plug in the TV
  • Restarted my Verizon FIOS router
  • Checked network settings on my router
  • Tried with IPV6 on then back off
  • Tested on wifi
  • Tested on wired ethernet

None of this makes a difference- all other streaming services continue to work, the Apple TV app fails.

There is a workaround. You shouldn't have to, but it is what it is. You have to fast forward past the recap or trailer introduction. On some shows it is about 2 minutes in. On some it can be more than 4 or 5 minutes in. Once you get past that it will play. It is an Apple issue, not your tv. Hopefully Apple is seeing these posts and working on fixing it.

I made the original post here. I'm a SW engineer & I know how to use tools like Wireshark for that. But -- this is on my daughter's TV in another state. At one point I did get instructions from Apple engineers- they wanted me to turn on logging and use my phone to make videos of all the logs. But I was no longer at my daughter's place and just don't have more time for it (I had already spent many hours with Apple support).

I hope no one will take offense if I suggest this is some kind of ******* contest between multi-billion dollar companies? It’s just to hard to believe that these enormous corporations can’t figure this issue out if, and it’s a big if, if they actually wanted to. They know I wouldn’t have bought a different TV or wouldn’t sign up to watch Apple TV over this issue. And should I decide along with hundreds of disappointed customers to forego these products if it would even represent a tiny rounding error on either mega company’s balance sheets.

We are less than trivial to the companies we have grown to consume with such reckless abandon. Same as not having an app for PBS on LG. It is absurd to think they couldn’t get an app written if they felt it was important. We should all become accustomed to being insignificant.

I have the same issue and have contacted Apple Support who have no idea and were of no help. I have to video the issue and send it to them. The support person I spoke to was great, but Apple seem not to be aware of the problem and have no solutions as yet - I have a new LG and have no problems with any other app/ service

I originally had the “Couldn’t Load Video” error as well. After the recent LG update for the Apple TV+ app (v1.0.74), I’m running into a problem where a show will stop playing after the recap. My TV screen goes black and the video won’t play (the scan forward/backward feature also stops working). I exit the show and then try to “continue watching” the show where I then see an infinite white spinner icon against a black screen (never loads). I tried deleting/reinstalling the app, clearing watch history and setting playback to SD only. Still, no luck.

This is what happens when I try to watch a show:
