AppleTV on LG webOS "Couldn't Load Video"

This is a strange problem. I have tried everything that I have found in Google searches on this issue.

If I play any AppleTV content, it briefly plays the Apple intro, then tries to load the stream. But this fails every time, and it shows the error "Couldn't Load Video / Check your internet connection then try again." What is strange, is this only happens when the Apple intro is played. If I play an episode that is already in the middle (so no intro sequence) it plays fine. Everything else works. As noted, I can play episodes that are already in progress. But I can't play anything from the beginning. To be clear, my internet connection is fine. I can play everything in my Apple TV library. Netflix, Prime, Hulu, Youtube, Youtube TV, Disney+, Max, and Peacock all work. LG channels work. It is just shows on Apple TV, that play the Apple TV intro sequence.

What I've tried:

  • Checked that the TV has the latest software
  • Restart TV
  • Delete & reinstall the Apple TV app
  • Unplug and plug in the TV
  • Restarted my Verizon FIOS router
  • Checked network settings on my router
  • Tried with IPV6 on then back off
  • Tested on wifi
  • Tested on wired ethernet

None of this makes a difference- all other streaming services continue to work, the Apple TV app fails.

This is a new LG TV from Costco:

There is a workaround. You shouldn't have to, but it is what it is. You have to fast forward past the recap or trailer introduction. On some shows it is about 2 minutes in. On some it can be more than 4 or 5 minutes in. Once you get past that it will play. It is an Apple issue, not your tv. Hopefully Apple is seeing these posts and working on fixing it.

Does anyone monitoring this thread have the ability to take a network trace? Maybe someone at apple or LG?

I was a network engineer for 20 years (retired). We used to troubleshoot issues like this all the time. The majority of the time it was a result of traffic to some site that was used for authorization or something similar that was filtered or set something like a cookie that we interrupted. It was a really tricky thing to resolve, required looking at multiple logs. There were thousands of packets coming through our systems every minute.

I no longer have the tools to perform this type of troubleshooting. Someone at Apple must have them.

Come on Apple, where’s that legendary customer service? Step up!!!!!!!

I had the same thing happen with our old ruku box. It worked for years, then started this same behavior. I bought a new box and it was fixed. One weird thing I found yesterday, when the content wouldn’t load on my tv I tried starting the show on my iPad, then tried sharing it with the tv. The screen share would just hang as soon as I hit the play. I think this is some kind of intellectual property control. Like it can’t verify my location so apple blocks the stream. Like trying to play a dvd with the wrong country code, it was used to lock international piracy. I’m so upset I gave away the ruku device that worked perfectly.

We have been experiencing this problem also. It's on both of our tvs. We also know others experiencing the same thing. We've tried all of the troubleshooting (restarting devices, restarting apps, uninstalling/reinstalling, etc.)

APPLE FIX THIS. it happens multiple times in the watching of one episode and it's garbage. We ended up giving up and watching something else on a different app because it was so aggravating.

We escalated with Apple. We escalated with LG. We escalated with Costco. Given that it is not an issue with any other services it’s likely Apple. It doesn’t happen with an Older LG we purchased from Costco, only the new TV this year. And it wasn’t an issue until summer So I suspect it was a regression from a software update. I hit 3 dead ends to resolve. I hope someone has better luck to resolve.

This is happening through my Xbox, the workaround people are saying doesn’t work for me at all, I can’t even pause the video before the prompt comes up. It immediately says it when I press a show. Super annoying and can’t believe Apple haven’t fixed this, apparently been around for months according to these comments
