I got finally got mine sorted out & working after trying all the fixes posted elsewhere on the internet (Software updates, downgrades, reboots, different phones, different monitors, different cables, settings -> Touch/Face ID & Passcodes > turn on Accessories/USB Accessories).

The apple certified accessory is seen as a "Docking Cable" but Apple uses AirPlay to mirror the screen. And I remembered I had AirPlay set to 'Ask" (since forever ago). So this seemed to work:

1. with the adapter unplugged, I went to Settings -> General -> AirPlay & Handoff -> Automatically AirPlay and set it to "Never"

2. Plugged in Adapter, no change.

3. Unplugged Adapter, went back into Automatic AirPlay and set it to "Automatic"

4. Plugged in the adapter - no change (at first), and while my blood boiled for a few minutes, my monitor magically started displaying the screen mirror. I'm assuming it took a few mins to 'update' something, but the firmware version of the adapter never changed, still running 8.0.0 on iOS 17.6.1

Hoping this saves someone's life... or at least some grief.
