M3 MacBook Air screen is dim after opening lid

I have an M3 MacBook Air 2024, running Sonoma 14.6.1. When opening the lid, the screen is sometimes very dim/dark. I can barely see the apps and am able to interact with them - the keyboard and trackpad all seem to work fine. The only way I've found to restore the screen to its previous brightness (the brightness it was at before closing the lid) is to hit the brightness up (F2) key. I have "Automatically adjust brightness" turned on. I ran diagnostics and no issues were found. This doesn't happen every time I open the lid, but seems to happen more often when the lid has been closed for a longer time. I bought this MacBook in April, and the issue just started a couple weeks ago.

I know that this is an older thread but I have been having the same issues with my M3 MacBook Air. Someone mentioned the light sensor next to the camera. I have my camera covered over with tape for privacy concerns. The tape covers the whole dark area where the camera is. If I remove the tape or make sure it is only over the camera this problem seems to go away.

FYI - I tend to close my laptop at night and usually plug it in so it is charged in the morning.

Thank you for the response. I'm familiar with this setting and have it enabled. I've noticed this setting in action when I'm unplugged and the screen just barely dims. When it does, I can still easily work. However, I'm not sure how this setting might impact the problem I'm having. When I open the lid after being closed for some time, I'd say the brightness level of the screen is maybe 10%? While I can barely make out what's on the screen, I certainly can't work like that. I feel like it's a different situation.

I have a 2020 MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.6.1. This has never been an issue until recently. I open my Macbook and the screen is very dim with dim “highlights” along the taskbar on the bottom. Brightness control does not do much of anything in this state. If I close the lid and re-open once or twice it usually comes back to normal brightness. I’ve had this Macbook for years and it is only a recent problem leading me to believe it has to be some sort of OS issue. Would love to find a real solution.
