You appear to have got your numbers mixed up in your opening statement.
There is NO problem updating FCP from 10.7 to 10.8.1 though it is always wise to make a copy of the old version and store it outside your Applications folder.
It is operating system upgrades that could potentially impact performance but a 2019 machine should have no problems.
Always make a zip of your existing version, in case something goes wrong and you wish to return to it.
In Finder, open the Applications folder, control-click and choose Compress Final Cut Pro.
Other than that, just go ahead and update. Oh... if you use optical discs (DVD or Bluray), be advised that support for them was removed in 10.8 - here is a case where the previous paragraph comes very handy.
The zip file is a spare copy and ideally you should have 2, one anywhere on your boot drive and another on a spare drive.
However, even if you keep it in the Applications folder next to the "normal" FCP there is no way it can open accidentally. It is "locked" in the zip file and in order to use it you would have to double-click the zip to extract FCP.
One of ours is a 2019 MBP which runs 10.8.1 just fine, no real performance hits at all. But also no AI/ML features.
Thanks - so once I make a zip file of FCP, does this create a copy of the application that in fact I won't be working with?
So, when I would next launch FCP as usual, that would not launch from the zip, but rather, the regular application that in time, I could update again (and with subsequent those updates, I'd make fresh zip files of the newer versions...)?
What specifically are you worried about? If you are not sure whether you can update, please open the AppStore. If it says update, you can update it.
As the laptop ages, updates will start to slow it down. Technically, it is approved, so there shouldn't be any issue. I do typically wait though, especially with an older machine. Thanks.
