Have successfully downloaded Word and signed into my free Microsoft account. However, cannot create a document to work on. A blank document opens, but I cannot type in text. Willing to accept reduced functionality, but don’t want to subscribe to Microsoft 365. Help, please.

Microsoft requires a subscription to Office 365 to create or edit documents with their Apps except on devices with a screen size of less than 10.1".
This has nothing to do with Apple.
Try a free alternative instead. Or even Apple's own Pages app which requires no subscription and is entirely free.

As I said on devices with small screens (less 10.1" diagonally, iPhones, small iPads) no subscription is necessary.
On devices with larger screens (large iPads, computers) an active subscription is required.
You need to subscribe to use Word.
You will want to reach out to Microsoft for any support on this.
