AAE files and IMG_E files in IOS 17.6.1

When I connect my phone to a PC and explore the photo contents, I am able to see both AAE files and duplicate photos that are numbered the same as their counterpart, except with an E added to the filename. I'm wondering if there is a way to turn off whatever is causing the E duplicates. I am using an iphone 12 pro. I do edit my photos on the phone, but only using the Photos app. I do not use any cloud services.

Also, I thought AAE files were discontinued? Does it have something to do with the age of my device?

You should not be using Windows Explorer to access photos on your iPhone. This is how you should be syncing photos→Copying personal photos and videos from iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer. If you use the correct method you don’t have to be concerned about AAE files or file names; they are integrated as part of the transfer. Those file names are used by the Apple Photos app to manage edits and adjustments to images. If you mess with them you can ruin the photos.
