Finder not recognizing iPad OS version

When syncing my iPad Pro M4 with my MacBook, the finder window shows the iPad software version as 17.6.1, but also says "A new version of the iPad software is available (version 17.6.1). Disconnecting / reconnecting doesn't change anything, nor does restarting the iPad and the MacBook. Same issue connecting via WiFi or directly by USB cable.

There were actually two releases of iPadOS 17.6.1. You may check Settings > General > About > iPadOS Version and tap the resulting version number to see which build you have.

The first was build 21G93. The second was build 21G101.

Generally speaking, those who updated reasonably promptly to iPadOS 17.6.1 will stay on build 21G93 and not be offered a further update. (That is my situation.) Perhaps your actions caused you to be offered the later build.
