HP 5.1.1 Printer Software

Hello everyone

I'm trying to install a MFP printer (HP laserjet E877dn), which is located on the network but not using the HP installer which works great when the printer is directly connected to the computer but it fails when the printer is on the network and a different subnet.

Does anyone know where can I find an updated version of this package:

HP 5.1.1 Printer Software Update – Apple Support (UK)

so I can manually try to add the printer?

Thank you

Mac mini, macOS 14.5

The HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E877dn is listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a supported model, so you may not even need drivers. AirPrint works with wireless or wired (Ethernet) network connections. However, normally, only if the printer is on the same network (and subnet) as the Mac. Is it not possible to find some kind of workaround solution? Sometimes, one can set up a separate small network (via the LAN ports of an extra, standard Wi-Fi router) just for AirPrint printing purposes, but I have no idea whether that is at all feasible or allowed in this case, or how it would affect the network as a whole.

Thank you for the information.

At least earlier, there was an HP Easy Admin download which did not require a printer to be available:

https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c06164609

However, even if that would allow the installation of some kind of printer driver, I do not know whether such a driver would be compatible with the latest macOS 14 Sonoma versions at all.

AirPrint is normally the preferred way, but seems to require some sort of special (bridge) solution or an entirely separate network for printing in this very case. Sorry, cannot be more specific.

Xerox (!) has a (2017) white paper Enabling Apple® AirPrint® with Your Xerox® AltaLink® Multifunction Printer. The general technical information about how AirPrint works, especially the details about Bonjour/mDNS in fine, could perhaps be of some interest to you.

Hi

Thank you for your reply. AirPrint does work, but it’s not an option when the printer is on a different floor. Also, the Bonjour service can only search a single subnet.

The frustrating part is that the HP "easy" Installer app only completes if it has access to the Internet. The Macs are on a private VLAN without Internet access, so the installer fails. I think one workaround might be to manually install the drivers and then add the printer by selecting IPP and choosing the drivers from the "Use" drop-down menu in the Add Printer window.

Thank you

This is why I was looking for an updated version of the package that includes the drivers for this printer.
