As mentioned, this guide is for macOS Sonoma, Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, and Catalina, but there is a link for earlier operating systems. If you are not sure which OS you have, try the instructions (or look carefully at the illustrations). If these don't make sense, or don't work, you probably have an earlier system.
This is in the above help page, but just to be clear: the Touch ID button is also the power button. On all MacBooks, the power button is the key in the upper right corner of the keyboard. Hold it down for ten seconds or so to shut down the computer, and then press it once to start up again.
