Some of the music I had on my iMac seemed to have been mysteriously deleted, but I have missing music on my external hard drive, a unit I can access via Network. I know how to download photos from the iMac to the external hard drive, but can I transfer or migrate music from that back to the iMac?

Drag and drop will work if you just want to move the files from one place to another.
Are the tracks being flagged as missing in Music? If so, then you need to reassociate them. There may be scripts out there that will do it en masse but I don't personally know of one.
But, if the tracks aren't listed in Music, dragging and dropping them onto Music should do what you want. See here for details:

My next question is: will the previously associated artwork (album covers) be restored or will I have to request them via the Music app?
