I really struggle to open my banking app. Sometimes I can't get past the authentication of my device, other times I can get as far as submitting my credentials but often it won't accept my fingerprint but it will open by password. I've checked with my bank and there is no issue from their side. Other apps seem to be ok and this has only been happening since I got this new iPad.

Try updating the Halifax app and also check with your bank's IT department to see if their app supports the version of iPad IOS installed on your iPad.
Also, if you are running any third party VPN or security apps on your iPad then uninstall them immediately and then restart the iPad and then check the banking app.

Once you have uninstalled the VPN, I would be willing to guess that after re-starting the iPad and checking for any new updates your problem will have gone away.
Third part security and VPN apps do absolutely nothing that IOS does not already do, meaning the only thing they do is take money out of your checking account, make IOS appear unstable and buggy and create odd behaviors just like you are experiencing. Simply keep IOS up-to-date and otherwise just enjoy the iPad and your device will remain fast, secure and stable.
What banking app are you trying to run? And what is the specific version of iPadOS 17 on your Air?
Well that really has instantly done the trick and my Hotmail mail is also updating instantly. Thank you so much, I've been struggling with this for months. I thought I was doing the right thing adding a VPN. I'll monitor it over the next few days but hopefully that's me sorted. Thanks again.
