Apple TV and port 49152 - 2024

Reviving some old threads, I couldn't find a definitive answer from someone technical at Apple, nor official technical documentation about this.

Basically, I have a MacBook Pro 2018 running Ventura Version 13.6.9 (22G830) on a Private VLAN. Also I have an Apple TV 4K 3rd gen WiFi running on a different, dedicated Streaming VLAN. Both devices are separated by a firewall. The MacBook is constantly trying to reach the Apple TV on the 49152 TCP port. I can allow it but I want to know what I am allowing. None of the family iPhones or iPads do this. Here's part of the firewall log...

Please, anyone has information about this port's usage and purpose?

As Xsan doesn’t seem to apply; it may be that it isn’t an Apple service, but a third party service.

These (49152–65535) are ‘private’/‘dynamically’ used ports, i.e. nothing standardized. Any app can choose any range within for whatever reason. Nothing to look up in documentation.

Only you can know what processes run on your Mac that might try these connections.

Apple TV wouldn’t be listening for incoming connections, except when a specific active app is configured to await incoming connections of a specified type (and specified port). The rest of the device is sandboxed, so that nothing can be compromised beyond that app’s cache space.

Does it stop happening if you start up your Mac in Safe Mode?

Thanks for your quick answer.

I did allow the port (which was 49153 and I mistyped as 49152) and the next thing was the Apple TV replying to UDP 3722, which apparently is rapportd...
