App Store card details entered including 4 digit card security code but keep getting the error message "the security code must be a 4-digit number"
Have tried shutting down, starting again, have tried my other cards which have 3 digit security codes, but it still comes up with the same message.

Yes it is. When I put 4 digit the code in, it gives me the error message. When I have tried other cards with a 3 digit code, it still gives me the 4 digit error message.
You’re entering this for a payment method for your Apple ID is that correct? Have you added the card to your Apple Wallet?
