How can I change the expiry date on a credit card without changing the card number on file?

This has been asked many times here and elsewhere, but not answered completely. I have a new card with the same card number and a NEW expiration date and NEW security code. Most answers end with a link like this one ( Add a payment method to your Apple ID - Apple Support) or this one ( If you need to change or update your Apple ID payment method - Apple Support). Both of those are unsatisfactory if you only have ONE card, because:

(1) you can only edit the address associated with the card, not the expiration date

(2) you cannot add a new payment method with the same number as an existing payment method

(3) you cannot remove the only payment method associated with the account, which would be needed in order to add the new (old) card with the new expiration date

So I am stuck, since I have only one card to share with Apple.

SOLVED. Thanks for your help.

With some edits.

I signed in at appleid.apple.com, but it still only lets me edit my name and address for the card! No editing for the exp date and CVC. Frustrating.

Helpfully, the appleid suggests trying the Wallet app on my phone, which seemingly offers the same...

BUT... the Wallet app let me remove this card even though it's the only payment method I have for Apple (I couldn't remove it from Settings in my iPhone). And then the Wallet app helpfully let me scan in my new card (with the same number) and voila, I'm back in business.

Further note: I went back to appleid.apple.com and refreshed my Payments page, and the new card shows up (looking just like the old one) except that it now lets me edit the expiration date and CVC number.

A final note: it's possible that the reason I couldn't edit Exp Date with the old card was that the card was superseded by the new card... when I activated the new card it deactivated the old card, and Apple Wallet's way of (not) telling me so was to (helpfully) refuse to let me edit the dead card. At any rate, it's fixed now, hope some of this maybe helps somebody else with a similar problem.
