Why are my document versions not saving in Pages?

What fresh **** is this? On a new MacBook Air, Pages is saving and numbering "versions" of my documents. I spent four hours working on an alleged Version 3, hitting "save" often. After a final save, I went later to reopen, and all the changes are gone. I go to Revert>show all versions, and it's greyed out. I open the document, it calls it document 2. There is nothing in the trash. If it's supposed to save all versions, where's document 1, let alone document 3? THINGS WORKED FINE WHEN YOU JUST HIT SAVE AND IT SAVED. Period. This work that's lost, I will never get back. I have a studio full of Apple stuff, I've been with Apple exclusively since 1985—and I'm about to dump it all and never look back.

Pages does not autosave changes to your document until after you manually save it once. Autosave may warn you when it cannot save to a non-Apple unsupported filesystem.

Reading through your post, my first impression is a substantial naivety about using Pages. It will not generate visual versioning numbers (e.g. Untitled 1, Untitled 2, etc.) unless you are failing to save unique and real document names. The Finder will throw a dialog if you attempt to save a document from Pages with the same name in the same location to protect against overwrite.

I always recommend that Pages users have an external drive as a Time Machine backup device because there have been occasions where users have messed up and needed to get a file back from an earlier time frame.
