Are McAfee scans in Safari legitimate?

Hi there,

I need help with regard to Safari alerts on potential virus infection which opts for scan showing McAfee scan. Is this real? And these alerts are becoming frequent. How do i manage and solve this issue?

Thank you.

That’s notification spam.

Web sites cannot perform malware scans, as that is inherently deeply intrusive, and thus is blocked.

Any websites or any pop-up ads that are claiming to perform remote scans are lying.

So what happened here? Somewhere along the path, you were offered and accepted notifications from some website or its ad networks, and the advertiser is using those notifications for spam, and now you no longer wish to receive those notifications.

Here is how to shut off notifications, and also how to block future requests to send these notifications:

There’s no malware here, so nothing needs to be done after the notification is removed.

It’s all a scam. Pay no attention to these alerts and DO NOT click on anything or call any phone number shown. If you do you WILL get your data stolen and your bank accounts possibly emptied out. The only way you can solve this is to not visit websites that have been compromised. Unfortunately there are a lot of compromised websites, even some popular ones.

One thing you can do that might help a little is to delete all cookies in Safari that have built up over time visiting websites.

Safari->Settings->Privacy->Manage Website data..->Remove all.

Safari->Settings->Advanced->click "Show features for developers" at the bottom of the page. A Develop menu item will appear in Safari’s top menu bar. Select Develop->Empty Caches

These two actions reset Safari and clear out any crud from bad websites.
